You Have the Reinstatement Notice—Now What
You need to pay it, but the notice does not explain which payment channel to use, whether you can pay before resolving the underlying suspension trigger, or what documentation the BMV requires alongside the payment. Paying through the wrong channel or without the correct supporting documents delays processing and extends the period you cannot legally drive.
This article walks you through the three payment channels Indiana accepts, the specific documentation each requires, the 10-business-day processing window after payment, and what must happen before and after you pay to restore your driving privileges. The reinstatement fee is one step in a multi-part process—not the final step.

The Reinstatement Fee Does Not Restore Driving Privileges Alone
If your license was suspended for driving without insurance, you must obtain a policy and file an SR-22 certificate with the BMV before reinstatement. If the suspension was court-ordered for a conviction, you must satisfy the court's requirements—completion of a driver safety program, payment of court fines, or compliance with probation terms—before the BMV will process reinstatement.
The BMV processes reinstatement applications in the order received, and processing takes approximately 10 business days after all requirements are met. Paying the fee early does not shorten this window. The 10-day clock starts when the BMV receives proof that every suspension trigger has been resolved, the reinstatement fee has been paid, and any required SR-22 filing is on record.
Many drivers pay the fee immediately after receiving the notice, then wait weeks for reinstatement because they did not realize the underlying suspension trigger had not been cleared. The BMV does not send a confirmation when the fee is paid—it sends confirmation only when reinstatement is complete.
The BMV will not process reinstatement until the underlying suspension trigger is resolved and all required documentation is on file.
Three Payment Channels and What Each Requires

Online payment through the BMV's myBMV portal is the fastest channel. You need your driver's license number, the suspension notice reference number, and a debit or credit card. The system processes payment immediately and generates a receipt you can print or save. The BMV updates your account within one business day, but reinstatement still requires resolution of the underlying suspension trigger and any required SR-22 filing. Online payment does not bypass the 10-business-day processing window—it only shortens the time between payment and the start of that window.
Mail payment requires a check or money order made payable to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, mailed to the address on your suspension notice along with a copy of the notice itself. Include your driver's license number on the check memo line. Mail processing adds 5 to 7 business days before the BMV records the payment, and the 10-business-day reinstatement processing window begins after that. In-person payment at any BMV branch accepts cash, check, money order, or card. Bring the suspension notice and a valid photo ID. The branch issues a receipt immediately, and the BMV records the payment the same business day.
What Happens After You Pay
After the BMV records your payment, your account shows the fee as satisfied, but your driving privileges remain suspended until you complete the remaining requirements. If your suspension was for driving without insurance, you must obtain a policy from a carrier licensed to write coverage in Indiana and have that carrier file an SR-22 certificate electronically with the BMV. The SR-22 filing must remain active for 5 years from the date of the conviction or suspension order.
If your suspension was court-ordered, you must obtain a clearance letter from the court stating that all requirements have been met. The court sends this letter to the BMV, not to you. Contact the court clerk to confirm the letter has been sent before you contact the BMV about reinstatement. The BMV will not process reinstatement without the court's clearance on file.
Once the BMV has the reinstatement fee payment, proof that the suspension trigger is resolved, and any required SR-22 filing, it processes reinstatement within 10 business days. You receive a confirmation letter by mail when reinstatement is complete. Until you receive that letter, you cannot legally drive. Driving on a suspended license during the processing window is a separate criminal offense that triggers a new suspension and additional fines.
BMV Reinstatement Processing
10 business days
Indiana's BMV processes reinstatement applications within 10 business days after receiving the fee payment, proof that the underlying suspension trigger is resolved, and any required SR-22 filing. This window does not include mail transit time or delays caused by incomplete documentation.

SR-22 Filing and Multi-Vehicle Households
If your suspension requires SR-22 filing, every vehicle you own or regularly drive must be insured under a policy that carries the SR-22 certificate. Indiana requires minimum liability coverage of $25,000 per person for bodily injury, $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $25,000 for property damage. The SR-22 certificate proves to the BMV that you carry at least these minimums and that the policy will remain in force for the required 5-year period.
Households that insure multiple vehicles on one policy can file a single SR-22 certificate that covers every vehicle on that policy, as long as you are listed as a driver. If you share a household with other drivers and vehicles, and those vehicles are titled to other household members on separate policies, the SR-22 certificate on your policy does not cover those vehicles. The BMV requires proof of insurance for every vehicle you own or regularly operate, and the SR-22 filing must attach to a policy that lists you as the named insured or a listed driver.
Compare Carriers and Confirm SR-22 Availability
Not every carrier licensed to write auto insurance in Indiana files SR-22 certificates. Carriers that do file SR-22 include Acceptance Insurance, Allstate, American Family, Bristol West, Dairyland, Elephant, Farmers, GAINSCO, Geico, National General, Progressive, Root, State Farm, The General, and USAA. Carriers that do not explicitly confirm SR-22 filing capability in their Indiana underwriting disclosures may still offer it—contact the carrier directly to confirm before you purchase a policy.
When comparing carriers, confirm that the policy meets Indiana's minimum liability requirements, that the carrier will file the SR-22 certificate electronically with the BMV within 24 to 48 hours of policy binding, and that the policy term covers the full 5-year SR-22 filing period or that the carrier will refile the certificate at each renewal. Use the site's comparison tool to identify carriers that write SR-22 policies for households with multiple vehicles and confirm coverage options that fit your household's structure.
