What the Reinstatement Fee Pays For
This is not a fine for the violation that triggered the suspension. It is an administrative fee the BMV collects to cover the cost of reviewing your compliance with suspension requirements, updating your driving record, and issuing clearance to drive again.
The fee applies regardless of the suspension trigger: a DUI conviction, accumulation of points, driving without insurance, or failure to appear in court. The BMV does not reduce or waive the fee based on the reason for suspension, your financial situation, or how quickly you resolve the underlying trigger.

The BMV charges this fee for every license reinstatement, regardless of the suspension trigger. The fee is paid after you satisfy the underlying suspension requirements, not before.

When You Pay the Fee
You pay the reinstatement fee after you satisfy every requirement the suspension imposed. The BMV will not accept payment—and will not process reinstatement—until you clear the underlying trigger. If your suspension was for a DUI conviction and required SR-22 filing for five years, you must file the SR-22 before paying the fee. If the suspension was for unpaid tickets, you must pay the tickets first. If it was for accumulating too many points, you must wait out the suspension period.
The BMV processes reinstatement within 10 business days of receiving payment and confirming compliance. That 10-day window begins only after the BMV verifies that you have met every condition of the suspension. Paying the fee early does not shorten the suspension period or trigger early reinstatement. The fee is the last step, not the first.
Many drivers assume paying the fee immediately after suspension will speed up the process. It does not. The BMV holds the payment but does not act on it until compliance is verified. If you pay before clearing the trigger, your money sits with the BMV while your license remains suspended. You gain nothing by paying early.
The BMV will not reinstate your license until you satisfy every suspension requirement.
What Happens If You Don't Pay

If you clear the underlying suspension trigger—file the required SR-22, complete a court-ordered program, or wait out the suspension period—but do not pay the fee, your license stays suspended. The BMV does not send reminders or payment notices. It waits for you to initiate reinstatement by paying the fee and submitting proof of compliance.
Driving on a suspended license in Indiana is a criminal offense. If you are stopped while your license is suspended for nonpayment of the reinstatement fee, you face additional charges, fines, and a longer suspension. The original suspension does not expire or reset. It remains active until you pay the fee and the BMV processes reinstatement. There is no statute of limitations on unpaid reinstatement fees.
How to Pay the Reinstatement Fee
You pay the fee directly to the Indiana BMV, either online through the BMV's myBMV portal, by mail with a check or money order, or in person at a BMV branch. The BMV does not accept cash by mail. If you pay online, the system confirms payment immediately and begins the 10-business-day processing window. If you pay by mail, processing begins when the BMV receives and deposits your payment.
Before you pay, confirm that you have satisfied every suspension requirement. If your suspension required SR-22 filing, verify that your insurance carrier has filed the certificate with the BMV and that the filing shows as active in the BMV's system. If the suspension was for unpaid tickets, confirm the court has notified the BMV of payment. If the suspension was time-based, confirm the suspension period has ended. The BMV's myBMV portal shows your suspension status and lists outstanding requirements.
After payment, the BMV updates your driving record and mails a reinstatement notice to the address on file. You do not receive a new physical license. Your existing license becomes valid again once the BMV processes reinstatement. If your license expired during the suspension, you must renew it separately after reinstatement. The reinstatement fee does not cover renewal.

Insurance Requirements After Reinstatement
If your suspension was for driving without insurance or for a DUI conviction, the BMV requires you to carry proof of future financial responsibility before reinstating your license. In Indiana, that proof is an SR-22 certificate filed by your insurance carrier. The SR-22 filing period is five years, measured from the conviction or suspension date. You must maintain continuous coverage for the entire period. If your carrier cancels your policy or you let coverage lapse, the carrier notifies the BMV, and your license is suspended again.
The reinstatement fee does not include the cost of SR-22 filing or the insurance policy itself. The policy premium depends on your driving record, vehicle, and coverage selections. Carriers that write SR-22 policies in Indiana include USAA, Geico, Progressive, The General, Dairyland, Bristol West, National General, Farmers, GAINSCO, Acceptance Insurance, and Root. Not every carrier writes SR-22, and not every carrier offers the same rate for high-risk drivers.
Compare Carriers Before You File
A driver reinstating after a DUI suspension who needs SR-22 filing will pay different premiums depending on which carrier writes the policy. Some carriers specialize in high-risk drivers and offer lower base rates for drivers with violations. Others charge higher premiums but provide better service or more flexible payment plans.
Before you pay the reinstatement fee, compare carriers that write SR-22 policies in Indiana. Get quotes from at least three carriers. Verify that each carrier can file the SR-22 electronically with the BMV and that the filing will show as active in the BMV's system before you pay the reinstatement fee. Once you pay the fee, the 10-business-day processing window begins, and you cannot delay reinstatement to shop for better coverage. Compare first, then pay.
